IRS 501(c)(3) Approval Letter

EMPATHY Mental Health shall be operated exclusively for educational and charitable purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, or the corresponding section of any future Federal tax code.  The primary purpose of the corporation is to provide healthcare services to persons experiencing mental illnesses, helping them to achieve and maintain recovery. The corporation may also provide or arrange for the provision of services for co-occurring Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) and physical health illnesses.

EMPATHY Mental Health commits itself to providing all services with sensitivity to the culture and values of the clients we service, and to offer, as appropriate, treatment for groups organized with special needs in mind (e.g., gender, sexual orientation, older adults, Spanish language, co-occurring disorders, and developmental disabilities). We guarantee equal access to treatment for all persons in need, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, disability, age (18 years or over), or sexual orientation.

While there are some organizations that provide information and resources for mental illness among African-Americans, EMPATHY Mental Health is the first and only organization nationally conceived, founded and led by African-Americans that actually provides the services of mental health professionals in residential treatment, outpatient and community (including in-home) settings.

Subject to the foregoing, EMPATHY Mental Health intends to undertake special outreach to members of the African-American community, since research has shown that African-Americans today continue to face significant disparities and equal access to mental health services due to the legacy of racism in our country.
